Part-time Lecture

 

Teach and create courses related to Film Art and Studies for the Certificate in English Literary Studies, Optional modules in Film Studies (in English): "The Concept of Identity in HK Cinema", "Melies, Keaton, Chaplin, Genius of the Silent Era", "Jazz & Cinema", "Introduction to the French New Wave", "Shakespeare and Cinema", "Andrei Tarkowski", "The Worlds of James Bond", “The Star Wars Saga”, “Introduction to European Cinema”, Orson Welles.

  • “The Concept of Identity in Hong Kong Cinema” was a great success because it was based on filmmakers that marked Hong Kong cultural legacy and specific aesthetics such as Wong Kar Wai, Fruit Chan, Ann Hui and Herman Lau. Students developed inquires about their own identity as a result of studying situations of characters in film plots.
  •  Students were stimulated to know more about their own root through comparative methods involving East and West intercultural exchanges, especially in the course on French New Wave and on European Cinema.
  • Was asked by Dr. Peter Kennedy at the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE) of the University of  The Hong Kong to be a Consultant to design a new Certificate in Film Studies.
  • Was asked by Dr Hector Rodriguez, Assistant Professor in the School of Creative Media at City University to make a presentation at the Cultural Center of Macau on documentary filmmaker, Chris Marker
  • Was invited by Professor Ian Holliday, from the faculty of Social Sciences of The University of Hong Kong as a guest speaker on two French movies: «L’Esquive» directed by Abdelatif Kechiche, and «Vipère au poing» directed by Philippe de Broca, as part of The French Semester of its faculty.
  • Appeared in the South China Morning Post dated 20 May 2006 regarding the launching of a new Course on the Star Wars Sagain The University of Hong Kong (SPACE)
  • Appeared as guest speaker at Sarah Passmore’s Naked Lunch Programme from RTHK Radio 3 on 29 May 2006 to talk about the new Course on Star Wars Saga.

Head of French Department

 

Graduate Master in French as a Foreign Language, teaching French speaking and writing skills to Secondary School students (from Form 1 to Form 5). Prepare students for the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination in French, equivalent to I.G.C.S.E level, using Junior Plus, 1, 2, and 3as well as videos, CDs, DVDs fictions (Cocteau’s Beauty and The Beast, Jacques Tati’s My Uncleand Jour de Fête, Les Misérablesby Raymond Bernard) and DVD documentaries (Raymond Depardon, Jean Vigo and Jean Rouch), novels (Gosciny’s Le Petit Nicolas, Ariane Fornia and Faiza Guène’s works etc.), comics (Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke and Gaston Lagaffe) and short essays (Les goûters philosophiquesseries).  Working on creative short films made by students on Bombay TV and exercises from French TV 5 website.

In charge since May 2009 of the International Baccalaureate French Language B option and ab Initio.

  • Increased the number of students obtaining grade A in French in HKCEE from 50% in 1994 to 100% in 2002 and 2005.
  • The Global Théâtre International Drama Youth Festival in Canteleu (France) in May 2002 selected the DBS French Drama team as a representative in Asia to perform a drama written by play writer Bernard da Costa.
  • Actively identified talented students to participate in competitions.  A DBS student won a prize for his photographs related to a worldwide competition on the theme «J’ai deux amours, ma ville et Paris» through the International Federation of French Teachers (FIPF).  In addition, students won various prizes for drawings and comics strips competitions at the Francophonie Festival in March 2006, 2007 and 2008, organized by the French Consulate and the Alliance Française.
  • Organized bi-annual cultural trip to France for boys studying French in the summer or Easter, tailored made and designed for them in archaeological excavation, sailing boat training, maritime festival participation, exploration of castles, historical sites, international exhibitions, concerts, artist houses, etc., sponsored by some Old Boys and external bodies.
  • Created a Joint School French Club in 1994 to widen students’ exposures in all aspects of arts.
  • Created a yearly DBS event «La French Week» since 2003, to celebrate the French May Arts Festival in Hong Kong.  Activities organized included film screening, visits of exhibitions jointly organized with DBS History Society and DBS Arts Society, French food buffet, meeting French artists and writers to increase students’ exposures to French arts and cultures.  Attended and organized French classical music concerts, sometimes jointly with DBS Music Department. Students enjoy it tremendously, and parents appreciate the value and time dedicated to this event. 
  • Organized the “Spring Poet” program for schools and universities in Hong Kong since 2002, where a guest French speaking poet conducts poetry workshops in secondary schools and in universities, concluding by students reciting their own poems in poem recitals opened to the public.
  • Organized field trips to exhibitions (Picasso, French Impressionism, Paris 1730-1930: A taste for China, etc…) and film screenings with pedagogical questionnaire to be completed by students as term projects included in the curriculum
  • Organized an exchange program between DBS, and the French International School Lycée Victor Segalen in Hong Kong, to experience the daily life of French and Hong Kong young people, including sleep-over and joint translation French/English/ Chinese workshop.

Part-time Lecturer in French literature (taught in English)

 

  • Taught “French Literature Through The Ages”
  • First term: Medieval French Literature: Extracts from Lancelot, Le Roman de la Rose, La Chanson de Roland, Troubadours songs, etc.
  • Second term: Contemporary French Literature: Extract from Duras, Sarraute, etc. as well as songs written by Jean Ferrat, Jacques Brel, etc.
  • All students got grades between B+ and A
  • Theories of literature such as a concise approach in semiotics of Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva and Umberto Eco’s works were introduced.  Students were absorbed by the subjects that they often stayed behind to learn more.
  • Encouraged extra-curricular activities such as watching movies and listening to CDs related to the topics taught were greatly appreciated by students.
  • Contemporary French literature was introduced through arts such as songs (CD, video clip), drama, ballet, paintings, sculptures, movies (e.g.: adaptation of Duras’ works, Eric Rohmer’s works, etc.)

Lecturer in French Studies, Expert

 

Taught French, oral, writing skills (supervised term essays) and civilization for advanced-level students using French radio, TV programs, fiction films, newspaper, magazines, and textbooks like Sans Frontières Perfectionnement.

  • Encouraged a 4th year student to participate in a French short story competition from Le Monde FrenchNewspaper.  She got a first prize.
  • Created a weekly French Film Club which was extremely popular among students.
  • Organized a field trip to the exhibition on Auguste Rodin’s works in Shanghai for students studying French.   Students highly appreciated explanations given on each piece of work.
  • Created and presented a 80-week pre-recorded cultural program about France in Putonghua on Radio Shanghai, Supervised by Marc Lamy, Linguistic attaché at the Shanghai French Consulate.  The program was listened by 100 million people around Shanghai.  A special acknowledgement was given by Marc Lamy on work done. 

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS

 

Photography, video recording (VHS, DV, Beta), archaeological drawing, conduct archaeological excavation, create catalogue of pictures and/or art objects including captions.
